How much product is needed to treat a wooden surface?
Achieving the fire rating requires an absorption of 350 g/m² of product. This quantity must be distributed over the four visible and accessible surfaces of the substrate.
| Conditioning | Treated surface area | Calculation basis |
|---|---|---|
| 1 liter | 3,3 m² | 350 g/m² |
| 5 litres | 16,5 m² | 350 g/m² |
| 10 liters | 33 m² | 350 g/m² |
| 25 liters | 82,5 m² | 350 g/m² |
This guide allows you to quickly estimate the volume required based on the site’s surface area. For larger projects or outsourced applications, you can consult our wood treatment service.
On which types of wood can Alfa NT be applied?
Alfa NT is applied to raw softwood intended for outdoor use, such as spruce, larch or Western red cedar. The surface must be absorbent, clean, dry and free of any surface coating.
- Raw wood
- Bois propre et sec
- Porous and absorbent support
- Absence of paint, varnish, primer or saturator
Any existing finish that clogs the wood pores can prevent proper product penetration and compromise the desired result. For interior wood applications, specific products are available; please see our selection of wood fire retardants.
What fire rating allows Alfa NT to be obtained?
Alfa NT allows for a fire classification of B-s1,d0 depending on the intended application conditions. This classification corresponds to a limited contribution to fire development, low smoke emission, and the absence of flaming droplets.
- B: limited contribution to the development of fire
- s1: low smoke emission
- d0: absence of flaming droplets
To better understand how to read this classification, you can consult our guide dedicated to fire safety standards.
What is Alfa NT used for?
It can be used for cladding, facades, exterior finishes, and other exposed wood structures when the project requires fire protection with a B-s1, d0 rating. For more information on the regulatory framework, please see our page on fire safety standards.
How to apply Alfa NT?
The application of Alfa NT relies on rigorous surface preparation and adherence to the recommended application rates.
The wood must be raw, clean, dry, and uncoated. The product must then be applied evenly
until the required coverage is achieved.
It is recommended to apply the product in three successive coats to ensure optimal and even impregnation of the wood.
- Prepare a clean, dry, and porous piece of wood.
- Check for the absence of paint, varnish or primer
- Apply the product to the visible and accessible surfaces
- Respect the overall dosage of 350 g/m²
- Check the uniformity of the treatment across the entire piece

protection incendie du bois.
What are the drying times for Alfa NT?
Allowing sufficient drying time between coats is essential for proper application. Two hours of drying time at room temperature must be allowed between each coat, with no more than 10 hours between applications.
| Stage | Time |
|---|---|
| Intermediate drying time | 2 hours |
| Maximum time between two passes | 10 hours |
| Touch dry | 48 hours |
| Final polymerization | 7 to 10 days |
These delays help to preserve the quality of the micro-impregnation and prevent a previous layer from blocking the penetration of the next.
What is the difference between autoclave treatment and Alfa NT?
Alfa NT and autoclave treatment both achieve the same fire classification level, namely B-s1,d0. The difference therefore lies not in the level of performance sought, but in the way the wood is treated, the logistics of the construction site and the overall project time.
With Alfa NT, logistics are simpler and generally less expensive, since there’s no need for round-trip transport to a specialized facility. Autoclave treatment requires factoring in transport time, treatment time, and then the wood drying time, which can take around two months. With Alfa NT, a complete application can be carried out in 48 hours.
| Criterion | Alfa NT | Autoclave treatment |
|---|---|---|
| Classement feu visé | B-s1,d0 | B-s1,d0 |
| Method | On-site application | Specialized on-site treatment |
| Logistics | Simpler | Round-trip transportation required |
| Overall delivery time | Approximately 48 hours | Approximately 2 months |
| High flexibility on site | High | More restrictive |
For outdoor projects where time and ease of organization are key, Alfa NT offers a more flexible solution. To compare with other wood solutions, you can also consult our range of wood fire retardants.
Is maintenance required after application?
Yes, a visual inspection of the substrate is recommended after several years of exposure. On outdoor structures, this check helps identify any need for retreatment in case of visible deterioration of the wood.
A maintenance coat of between 175 and 350 g/m² can then be applied depending on the condition of the substrate.
- Visual inspection recommended after several years of exposure
- Reprocessing possible depending on the condition of the wood
- Maintenance dosage: 175 to 350 g/m²

What practical advice should be kept in mind before starting a project with Alfa NT?
Several points of vigilance can help to secure the application and avoid discrepancies in treatment on the construction site.
- Check that the wood is completely raw and absorbent before application.
- Treat the parts before installation when this facilitates access to the surfaces
- Respect the overall weight of 350 g/m²
- Do not exceed 10 hours between two passes
- Allow the substrate to dry completely before final exposure.
