What is the EUROMASSIF BOIS fire retardant used for?

EUROMASSIF BOIS is a liquid fire-retardant solution designed for treating untreated solid coniferous wood. It limits the wood’s contribution to the development and spread of fire, enabling it to achieve an M1 reaction-to-fire rating under the conditions specified in the test report.

This treatment is intended in particular for wooden elements used in interior fittings, sets, exhibition stands, stages, or public-access buildings, where the project requires a fire reaction rating.

EUROMASSIF BOIS is a colorless, non-flammable, liquid aqueous solution under normal conditions of use.

Discover our range on the wood fire retardants page.

Which types of wood are covered by the M1 classification?
EUROMASSIF BOIS’s M1 grading covers solid softwood of the yellow fir type.

Support tested as part of the test report

Natural yellow fir, raw and untreated, 10 mm thick.

The classification cannot be automatically extended:

  • to broad-leaved trees such as oak or beech;
  • to MDF, plywood, OSB, or particleboard
  • to resinous species not comparable to yellow fir
  • to wood with a thickness substantially different from that tested
  • to painted, varnished, oiled, or previously treated surfaces

Any medium located outside this perimeter requires prior validation by the inspection agency as part of your project.

In what types of packaging is EUROMASSIF BOIS available?

EUROMASSIF BOIS is now available in packaging tailored to professional needs and job sites requiring dip treatment:

  • 10 liters: for on-site trials and small production runs of parts
  • 20 liters: for small-scale production and occasional tasks
  • 30 liters: for intermediate series and workshops
  • 120 litres: for large-scale projects and regular treatments
  • 1,000 liters: for industrial needs and large-scale production

Choosing the right volume

The volume must take into account the quantity actually absorbed by the wood, as well as the volume required to properly fill the tank and completely submerge the pieces.

What quantity of EUROMASSIF BOIS should be applied?

The validated quantity corresponds to an application by dipping until the wood is saturated.

During the reference test, the dose measured in the wet state at the bath outlet was:

5.5 kg of product per m²

This quantity corresponds to an absorption rate of approximately 86.5% of the initial dry mass of the 10 mm yellow birch specimen tested.

Given the product’s density—approximately 1.10 kg per liter—the reference consumption corresponds to about 5 liters per m².

Packaging Theoretical surface area according to the test
10 L Approximately 2 m²
20 L Approximately 4 m²
30 L Approximately 6 m²
120 L Approximately 24 m²
1,000 L Approximately 200 m²

Note: These coverage figures are theoretical estimates based on the tested substrate. Actual consumption depends on the wood species, thickness, density, and absorption capacity. A portion of the volume must also remain in the tank to allow for complete immersion.

How should EUROMASSIF BOIS be applied in accordance with the test report?

The intended application method is complete immersion of the wood components.

  1. Prepare a soaking tank sized to fit the parts.
  2. Work in a properly ventilated area.
  3. Wear protective gloves and safety glasses.
  4. Completely immerse the piece of wood in the EUROMASSIF BOIS bath.
  5. Maintain immersion until the substrate appears saturated.
  6. Check that both faces and all edges are properly impregnated.
  7. Remove the specimen, allow it to drain, and then dry it to constant mass.

Application in accordance with the inspection report

A single application is required, but it must achieve wood saturation and the intended absorption rate.

Spraying, rolling, brushing, and using a spray gun do not correspond to the reference application method described in leaflet 2026.

How can you verify that the amount of product absorbed is sufficient?

The verification is based on weighing each piece or a representative sample before and after the treatment.

  1. Weigh the perfectly dry wood before immersion.
  2. Record its initial dry mass.
  3. Immerse the wood until saturated.
  4. Weigh the wet substrate upon removal from the bath.
  5. Calculate the absorption rate achieved.

Control formula

Absorption rate (%) = ((wet mass at saturation − initial dry mass) ÷ initial dry mass) × 100

The reference absorption rate obtained during the test was approximately 86.5%. The weights recorded before and after the treatment must be kept in the compliance file.

How do you prepare the wood before treatment?

Before immersion, the wood must be:

  • raw
  • dry
  • unpainted
  • unvarnished
  • unoiled
  • untreated
  • free from dust, grease, dirt, and resin.

Any existing paint, varnish, oil, or prior treatment prevents the product from properly penetrating the fibers. Stripping a substrate does not automatically ensure it falls back within the scope of the test report; its compatibility must be verified before treatment.

How do you compile the M1 compliance dossier?

Following the treatment, a complete file must be kept in the safety log and be available for presentation to the competent authorities or the inspection body.

This file must include:

  • the completed, dated, and signed treatment certificate
  • The EUROMASSIF BOIS user manual
  • the fire classification report
  • weighing the wood before and after its immersion in the bath
  • information identifying the parts and the site concerned

The number for the new official report (2026) is currently awaiting assignment. It must be added to the page as soon as it is received.

Is the EUROMASSIF BOIS treatment water-resistant?

No. EUROMASSIF BOIS is a non-washable treatment. After application and drying, treated items must not be exposed to water, washing, or prolonged moisture.

The product is therefore intended for wood kept under suitable indoor conditions. Exposure to water may impair the treatment and compromise the established compliance.

What are the precautions for use and storage?

  • Wear chemical-resistant gloves and safety glasses.
  • Avoid breathing aerosols and contact with skin or eyes.
  • In case of contact with the skin, wash thoroughly with water.
  • If irritation or a skin rash occurs, consult a doctor.
  • Keep containers tightly closed.
  • Store in a well-ventilated place, away from moisture and excessive heat.
  • Do not discharge the product into the sewer system or the natural environment.
  • Dispose of the product and its packaging in accordance with local regulations.

EUROMASSIF BOIS may cause an allergic skin reaction — hazard statement H317. Its shelf life is 12 months from the date of manufacture, under the specified storage conditions.
