Prepare for the visit of the safety commission

Are you responsible for an establishment that welcomes the public? You must pass a mandatory step (or requested by the mayor) before opening: the safety commission. A security specialist group visits your establishment to check its safety. Depending on what is observed, the opening of the establishment will be authorized or not. To save time, here are some tips to prepare for this safety commission visit.

What is a safety commission for ?

First of all, the safety commission is a visit to be taken seriously. It is usually made up of a representative of the mayor, a firefighter, a police officer, and a representative of the departmental territorial management. It is the commission that will authorize or deny the opening of your establishment. Its role is to check whether the establishment complies with safety rules regarding fire safety and the management of people’s movement. It ensures that everything is in place to minimize damage in the event of a fire or evacuation.

Depending on the type (in the form of one or two letters) and category of the facility (a number from 1 to 5), the rules are more or less strict. In particular, there is a difference between category 5 ERP (less than 300 people) and categories 1 to 4 (301 to over 1,500 people).

Commissions can also visit your facility at other times, at defined intervals, after work has been carried out or unannounced.

Fire risks : what the safety commission checks

To prevent fires and ensure the protection of people, the commission checks numerous elements. This may include the building’s design, evacuation plans, smoke extraction systems, or alarm systems.

For ERP categories 1 to 4, you’ll find all the instructions you need here.

For smaller establishments, here is a non-exhaustive list of elements checked :

  • verification of technical elements (automatic doors, electricity, gas, kitchen hoods, etc.)
  • clearances and emergency exits wide enough and permanently unobstructed
  • emergency exit signage (emergency plans, signs, etc.)
  • furniture with a standardized reaction to fire
  • decoration with standardized reaction to fire
  • alarm system
  • setting up a security register

To treat your furniture and decoration and certify their fire resistance, you can use our fire retardant products. They should be sprayed directly on the raw material. With your order, we provide an M1 certificate to prove that your furniture has been treated and made non-combustible.
