1. Nightclubs: the highest fire safety standards

Le monde de la nuit est un secteur particulièrement sensible. L’histoire a malheureusement prouvé qu’un incendie dans un lieu festif clos, sombre et dense en public peut avoir des conséquences dramatiques.

Today, French regulations leave nothing to chance.

In these public access buildings, every item of fit-out – including curtains, carpets, wall coverings and furniture – must have an M1 fire rating.

During their inspections, safety committees and the fire service require fire safety certificates. Failure to comply may result in a negative assessment and an administrative closure.

It was to meet these high standards that Les Folies Pigalle called upon Alfaflor’s expertise.

2. The renovation of the Folies Pigalle: preserving the building’s character

A true institution in Paris’s Pigalle district, this legendary club is famous for its intimate atmosphere and striking visual identity, dominated by a deep red.

In this type of venue, the décor is an integral part of the customer experience. The interior features long benches and velvet armchairs, designed to offer partygoers premium comfort until the early hours of the morning.

The challenge: saving the furniture rather than replacing it

For a nightclub manager, a safety committee’s order can quickly become a major logistical and financial challenge.

Replacing the bespoke benches with new, factory-certified M1 furniture was not the solution favoured by the establishment.

The aim of our project then became clear: to bring the existing furniture up to standard.

Our task was to thoroughly inspect every seat, backrest and armrest to ensure they met fire safety requirements.

The challenge was to preserve the ‘cabaret’ aesthetic and the softness of the red velvet, elements that are emblematic of the Folies Pigalle’s identity and charm.

3. The technical challenge: how do you make velvet fire-resistant?

Velvet is one of the most difficult fabrics to work with.

If an unsuitable product or incorrect application technique is used, the fibre can quickly become flattened, stiffen or leave visible marks.

The main risks:
  • fibre crushing,
  • cardboard or stiffened effect,
  • visible dark circles and spots,
  • changes in colour and texture.

Our technicians wear full personal protective equipment (PPE) to ensure that the fire-retardant treatment is applied safely and with complete control.

A professional application with EUROTEXTIL

For this project, we used our professional EUROTEXTIL solution, which is specifically designed for the flame retardancy treatment of delicate textiles.

The product is applied using professional sprayers that produce a fine mist, ensuring the treatment is evenly distributed over all the furniture.

This technique ensures that the pile is fully covered without saturating or flattening the fibres.

Result after drying:

  • the velvet regains its original softness,
  • no stiffness is apparent,
  • the red colour retains all its vibrancy,
  • the furniture’s high-end aesthetic is preserved.

4. On-site logistics: a service tailored to the nightlife sector

Closing a nightclub to carry out work to bring it up to standard results in a significant loss of revenue.

That is why our strength lies in our ability to adapt to the pace and constraints of nightlife venues.

Le traitement est réalisé directement sur place, en journée, pour ne pas impacter l’ouverture de l’établissement.

Located in a bustling business district, the OMAYA BAR is another must-visit spot for nightlife and after-work drinks. Their requirements were even more complex, as they involved both the décor and the furnishings.

The challenge: in addition to the ubiquitous artificial plants, the Omaya Bar wanted to bring all its furniture – fabric chairs and sofas – up to standard. This meant juggling different materials during the same project.

Our solution: The advantage of calling on Alfaflor’s expertise is our versatility. Our teams deployed several of our certified solutions: a product for the plants and a specific product designed to penetrate deep into the fibres of the sofas. The result? A ‘turnkey’ compliance solution delivered in record time.

The fireproofing process is carried out entirely on site. Once the treatment is complete, the drying phase begins. It is then the customer’s responsibility to ensure that the area is well ventilated. Depending on the layout of the premises and the type of material being treated, we strongly recommend setting up fans to speed up the process. This step is essential to ensure that the furniture is dry and ready for use as soon as possible.

5. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) about fireproofing in nightclubs

How long should we allow before reopening the club?

As with our work in bars and nightclubs, we recommend a drying and ventilation period of at least 72 hours.

This period allows for:

  • until the fabric has completely absorbed the product,
  • before the velvet loses the slight dampness it had in the early hours,
  • to ensure that any technical odours associated with the application are eliminated.
In the event of an inspection, what documents must be presented?

Once the work is complete, Alfaflor issues a personalised treatment certificate.

This document, together with the official M1 classification certificate, must be submitted to the safety committee or the fire service to demonstrate that the furniture complies with the relevant standards.

Is there a risk that the treatment will stain customers’ clothes?

No. Once the drying time has elapsed, the EUROTEXTIL solution is fully bonded to the core of the fibre.

The treatment is colourless and does not run at all, even after several hours of use.

Is the product irritating or harmful to the skin?

Absolutely not.

Although our technicians wear protective equipment during spraying, the treatment is completely harmless once dry.

Velvet retains all its softness and poses no risk of allergies or irritation to your customers.

Do I need to repeat the treatment every year?

Good news: no.

As long as the benches remain indoors and are not subjected to intensive cleaning, the M1 classification remains valid, according to our report.

What happens if I add new armchairs or footstools?

The M1 certificate issued by Alfaflor covers only the furniture present and treated during our visit.

If new seating is added at a later date, it must be treated separately in order to comply with fire safety requirements.
