Why and how to fire-retardant wood ?

19 October 2020

Wood is treated to delay its ignition and limit the spread of flame. Two routes are covered by a test report: immersion in a bath of EUROMASSIF BOIS, at 5.5 kg/m² to saturation, which gives the M1 classification on raw yellow-fir softwood 10 mm thick; and the VI BOIS intumescent system, primer and topcoat at 200 g/m², which gives the B-s1,d0 classification indoors.

Whether it is acacia, recycled wood, oak, wenge, or others, wood can be treated with a specific fire retardant product. These treatments are adapted to different types of wood, ensuring effective protection whatever the base material.

Definition of wood fire-retardant treatment

Wood (furniture, decoration, etc.) must be treated with a fire retardant in all establishments open to the public, according to standard M1 or M2, the fire-retardant standard used in France. Each establishment is required to have the treatment classification test report to present to the safety commissions. Fire-retardant treatment involves applying a product that limits the material’s contribution to the development of fire, enabling it to reach the reaction-to-fire classification required for the use concerned.

Importance of M1 and M2 standards and explanation

The application method validated by the test report for EUROMASSIF BOIS is full immersion in a bath: spray application is not within the scope of the test report.

The M1 and M2 standards are reaction to fire classifications of materials, indicating their behavior in the event of fire. The M1 standard designates a M1-classified material, while the M2 standard corresponds to a hardly flammable material. These standards are crucial because they ensure a high level of safety in public places, thereby reducing risks for occupants. Materials classified M1 or M2 are subject to rigorous tests to assess their fire resistance and their contribution to the spread of flames.

The treatment uses a colourless, odourless liquid product, applied by soaking (immersion) until saturation — the method validated by the test report. EUROMASSIF BOIS carries hazard statement H317 (may cause an allergic skin reaction): wear gloves and eye protection, and refer to the safety data sheet. The reference dose is a surface dose at saturation, measured in the wet state on removal from the bath, of 5.5 kg/m², corresponding to an absorption rate of approximately 86.5 % of the initial dry mass of the support.

Steps and/or methods to follow to fire-retardant wood

By soaking (immersion)

The application method validated by the test report for our wood fire retardant EUROMASSIF BOIS is complete immersion in a soaking tank:

  1. The wood to be treated must be raw, unvarnished, unpainted and untreated. The support must be dry and free of dust, oil, grease, dirt and resin.
  2. Prepare a soaking tank in a ventilated area, wear gloves and protective goggles, then fully immerse the piece of wood in the bath until apparent saturation, making sure that both faces and the edges are properly impregnated. One single application is required.
  3. Drain, then leave to dry to constant mass, under ambient temperature and relative humidity conditions, before any use or installation.
  4. Weigh the support before and after treatment: these weighings must be added to your compliance file, together with the completed classification test report, the instructions for use and the classification test report.

How much should I use to fire-retardant wood ?

The surface dose at saturation, measured in the wet state on removal from the bath, is 5.5 kg/m², i.e. approximately 5 litres per m², corresponding to an absorption rate of about 86.5 % of the initial dry mass. LNE test report no. P258195 – DEC/3 covers natural softwood of the yellow fir type, raw and untreated, 10 mm thick. The classification does not automatically extend to hardwoods (oak, beech…), wood-based panels (MDF, plywood…), softwood species not comparable to yellow fir, or significantly different thicknesses: any support outside this scope requires prior validation by your inspection body. A precise estimate is available on the product sheets, allowing the necessary quantity to be calculated according to the specificities of each project.

1-hour fire-rated wooden panel
